Alright, so Loki and I were kicking around some ideas earlier and I thought
I'd pass them along here for comment:
[1] Completely removing "classes" from the game. No longer would you roll a
warrior, thief, sage, bard, cleric, etc. but you'd just roll a character.
[2] Perhaps the character creation process could get a little more detailed,
asking you more "in-character" questions that would affect more subtle aspects
of game-play. Religion, starting town/zone, etc.
[3] Difficulty in learning Skills/Spells would be based on an algorithm that
would make it difficult to be a generalist, not-so-difficult to specialize,
etc. You would be able to learn and use Skills/Spells above your level,
however there would be an algorithm for determining penalties/bonuses based on
your level.
[4] Teachers would no longer be "monuments" in the sense that not all teachers
will be able to teach all skills/spells (even of a particular previous
"class"). Not all teachers would be stationary or even announce their
existence as teachers. Some teachers may require certain criteria (i.e.
quests) be fulfilled before they'll even allow you to discuss learning
something.
[5] Equipment levels would not prevent you from using equipment higher-level
than yourself, however you would be penalized based on level differential. In
contrast an individual with weapon mastery and swordsmanship at 100% should be
able to utilize any sword(like) object in the game without penalty.
I'm sure I forgot some, so Loki... feel free to chip in at any time =)
