[Scrymud] Unable to unzip

Hi,
    I have downloaded the server 
ScryMUD.2.1.4.stable.tar.gz 
but when I try gzip or tar I get a invalid format or not a gzip file error.
Can you tell me what version you are usesing, I am running Linux (kernal
2.4), I am not sure what  version of gzip but the installation I used is
about 1 year old.
